The chair that changed the way we sit
Variable™ was first introduced at the Scandinavian Design Fair in Copenhagen in 1979. With its norm-breaking appearance, the little chair dismantled all existing perceptions of what a chair could be. As we celebrate 45 years of our most-loved design, we look back and reflect on the history of the original kneeling chair and how it has forever changed the way we sit.
Norm-breaking design
With a tilted seat, two knee cushions and curved runners, Variable™ broke with all previous notions of how a chair should be designed. It stood in stark contrast to the arch type of a chair which consisted of a flat seat, a backrest, and four legs. Its untraditional visual expression was met with sceptisism among many of those in the furniture industry at the time. But when introduced to the broader public, the reception was overwhelmingly positive. It received significant attention from both the public and media, and was soon-after recognized as a revolutionary new form of seating. Sales figures spiked, and soon, Variable™ was to be found in homes all around the world. It represented something forward-thinking, it was fun, unusual - and most importantly - it felt good to sit in.
"I have made an effort to avoid following trends and fashions, often giving my products unconventional form”
- Peter Opsvik
A celebration of movement
The chair’s untraditional design continues to captivate, even now, 45 years later. Variable™ is still unparallelled in its construction, function and quality, and with the rise of new ways of working and home offices, more relevant than ever. Variable™ is the ultimate embodiment of our philosophy - a celebration of movement coupled with a rebilious disregard for norms.
Often imitated, never duplicated
Variable™ is crafted in collaboration with skilled partners across Europe who share our unwavering commitment to quality. 26 thin layers of veneer ensure that the wooden runners are strong and durable. This means that only one horizontal support brace is needed, and the minimalist expression of the chair is kept intact. The curvature of the runners is a science perfected over the past five decades. Positioned at angle, pointing slightly outwards, the runners endure pressure created also by sideways movements. Move any way you like and Variable™ will support you.
